Letter 8: Peaks and Valleys

Outline:
  • Law of Undulation
    • man is spirit/animal
    • valley and peaks
    • 'dryness' not necessarily Wormwood's doing
    • God uses valleys
  • To demons, we are food; to God we are his children. He flows through us.
  • 2 weapons God does not use: Irresistible and Indisputable
  • 'The prayers offered in the state of dryness are those which please Him best.'
  • Demons 'tempt'
  • God wishes us to follow Him with our will.
Terminology:

  • Undulation - wavy or wave like motion, moving back and forth
  • Mitigated - made less harsh or hostile, made less severe or painful
  • Ignoble - of low birth, without honor
  • Assimilate - to take up and absorb as nourishment, to absorb into a cultural tradition, to learn or understand

Questions/Discussions:
  • We all have periods of dryness in our spiritual walk. It's normal. Don't worry unless that's all you ever have.
  • 'some of His special favourites have gone through longer and deeper troughs than anyone else' - who comes to mind?
  • '...and if only the will to walk is really there He is pleased even with their stumbles.'

Letter 1: Jargon, not Argument

Review: Remember that Uncle Screwtape, a demon, is writing to his nephew Wormwood. Outline: Wormwood thinks he can argue the patient to his side. Using the goal of materialism. Screwtape points out the problems in this approach: thinking doesn't lead to anything (due to demon influence of press?) absolutes, proofs, truth are no longer common (gee, kind of like are world today?) avoid real science since that makes one look at things you can't necessarily see (of course thinking we can explain everything is dangerous).
