Letter 5: War Breaks Out

Review:

Outline:
  • Wormwood is really pumped because war has broken out in Europe
  • Screwtape warns that while good, there are dangerous side effects:
    • "thousands turning in this tribulation to the Enemy."
    • "..their attention diverted from themselves to values and causes which they believe to be higher than the self."
    • Death coming when expected, and one can prepare "In wartime not even a human can believe that he is going to live forever."
Terminology:
  • sophistical - of great reasoning, thinking
Questions/Discussions:
  • We should not assume the outcome of situations when the Lord is present.
  • Death bed conversions, funerals, traumatic situations
  • One of my pastors from the past, John Hawco, shared a message about 'desperate prayer'. There are times when it becomes clear we are beyond our own power and it becomes clear, it is only with God's power that change is possible.
  • Job - big time trial, glorified the Lord and Job's faith rewarded.

Letter 1: Jargon, not Argument

Review: Remember that Uncle Screwtape, a demon, is writing to his nephew Wormwood. Outline: Wormwood thinks he can argue the patient to his side. Using the goal of materialism. Screwtape points out the problems in this approach: thinking doesn't lead to anything (due to demon influence of press?) absolutes, proofs, truth are no longer common (gee, kind of like are world today?) avoid real science since that makes one look at things you can't necessarily see (of course thinking we can explain everything is dangerous). However, true debate and sincere searching will lead to the truth (and the truth shall set you free) The approach to take is: "Jargon, not argument, is your best ally in keeping him from the Church."
