Letter 2: Parrot Talk

Review:
Letter 1 introduced us to Wormwood, Screwtape, and the patient. The chief weapon used was "Jargon".

Terminology:
  • Inveterate = firmly established by age or long presence
Outline:
  • The Patient becomes a 'Christian'
  • Definition of the 'church': truth vs. patient's view
  • Definition of being a Christian: book smart vs. applying (appears to be a Christian)
  • Christianity is more than a feeling, its work. This can be disappointing.
  • God allows us to 'yield' instead of forcing
  • Use faults/sins of others to produce self-righteousness
  • His humility in going to church with these "smug" people
Questions/Discussions:
  1. Was patient really a Christian? His habits were all the same?
  2. My testimony - fire insurance
  3. Parrot talk - jargon of the world last week, jargon of the church now.
  4. Are you proud of being humble?
